John Platou’s Boat Building Legacy – Emma Grace

Back in 2008, when John Platou’s granddaughter Emma Grace was 6, together they built – from scratch – an 8′ Minimost Hydro from plans saved from a 1960 Popular Mechanics magazine.

This boat won the 2008 Keels and Wheels Corinthian Award given in appreciation for demonstrating that passing these skills on to future generations was deserving of exceptional recognition.

Since then, this boat-building team of John and Emma have taught and assisted hundreds of kids building boats at annual Keels and Wheels Concours and the Houston Boat Show.

While awaiting her chance to legally skipper her own boat with appropriate outboard power, Granddad John has paddled, co-piloted, towed and other wise supported Emma’s enjoyment of her hydro.

This just in!!! Check out this video of Captain Emma Grace’s 8 FT Minimost with 73 Evinrude 6 HP going about 17 MPH on Lake Houston.  At the helm is Emma’s younger brother Jack, age 8 who is currently building his own hydro.
